Before we built GetRecruited, we spent months talking to families, athletes, and coaches about why college recruiting feels broken. What we found was a market full of services charging thousands of dollars and delivering far less than the pitch promises — and families paying for them not because they wanted to outsource recruiting, but because nobody was offering what they actually needed: an honest, structured way to run it themselves.
The starting question
Why are so many families frustrated by college recruiting?
We expected the answer to be about access — that families couldn't reach the right coaches, didn't have a network, didn't know which schools were realistic. Those problems are real, but they weren't where the frustration came from. The deeper pattern across hundreds of forum posts, parent quotes, athlete videos, and review sites was different: families weren't short on information so much as short on honest guidance about what was realistic — and a clear order for acting on what they already knew.
A father on a baseball forum, whose son was a junior who'd already taken three official visits: "What did you do right? What would you have done different? How does the initial contact work? What is the process like?" The most basic questions were still unanswered after years inside the system.
The biggest pain pattern: predatory services
The single largest cluster of family pain points — by quote count, across forums and review sites — was financial harm from paid recruiting services.
The pattern was consistent. A free profile is offered as the entry point. A "recruiting assessment" sales call follows within days. The teenager is usually on the call. Pricing isn't disclosed until late in the conversation. Quoted prices range from $1,500 to $7,000+ depending on the family. After signing, families report automated camp invitations, generic emails, and no personalized strategy.
A parent on Reddit, describing the sales call: "They don't give you the pricing ahead of time, push hard for the call, and then give you a price tag that ranges from $2k to $7k depending on how much you love your kid — while your kid is on the phone too."
An athlete looking back at the experience: "Most of the 'recruiting services' are just predatory… they sell you a dream for $3k and don't do anything you can't do for free."
A parent who paid $3,000 for a premium NCSA tier described what their family got: "Didn't get a single email that wasn't an automated camp invite."
The financial loss is real — $1,500 to $7,000+ per family — but the emotional cost is bigger. Families who paid for these services described the post-purchase realization as demoralizing: they spent the money because they didn't know what else to do, and then discovered they could have done the work themselves.
What coaches actually said
We also looked at what college coaches say publicly about platform-routed recruiting outreach.
The patterns were sharper than expected. Coaches reliably describe two kinds of athlete outreach: direct, athlete-led emails about their specific program, and everything else. The first kind earns evaluation time. The second — including the platform-routed outreach that paid services generate at scale — usually gets archived.
A Lewis and Clark College football coach told a reporter he "hadn't pulled up NCSA in two years." Coach quotes across sports describe similar patterns. Platform-routed messages have a structural pattern coaches recognize, and they treat them as a category rather than as individual recruits.
This finding had a clear implication. If the most reliable signal of coach interest is a personalized email from a teenager — and platform-routed messages don't trigger that response — then the entire premise of paying for a service to "handle the outreach" is upside-down. The work that earns replies is exactly the work that has to come from the athlete directly.
The honest-evaluation gap
The third major pattern was families targeting programs above their athlete's realistic level for years before recalibrating.
An athlete on YouTube: "I have no idea if I'm D1 or D3. My club coach says I'm D1, but I've emailed 50 coaches and literally zero have replied. Who is lying to me?"
A parent on College Confidential: "How are we supposed to know if he's 'D1 material'? … There's no honest feedback, just silence."
The honest-evaluation gap is structural. Club coaches are often incentivized to retain paying families, so their feedback skews optimistic. College coaches don't owe athletes assessments — silence is easier than rejection. Recruiting services tend to validate whatever target level the family arrived with, because validation makes the sale.
Families who eventually got their athlete recruited shared a trait: they recalibrated to a realistic division early, even when it was lower than they'd hoped. Families who didn't — who kept emailing the wrong level for months or years — described the experience as feeling like the system was lying to them.
The "coaches will find my kid" misconception
A smaller cluster but a critical one. Across forums, families described a belief that turned out to be the most damaging single misconception in the market: if my kid is good enough, coaches will find us.
A parent on FieldLevel: "If your child is not a 5-star recruit, which most aren't, you have to find the schools/coaches."
Outside of true elite-prospect recruiting, this isn't how the market works. Coaches recruit athletes who reach out to them directly with proof a coach can evaluate. Athletes who wait to be discovered usually aren't. The misconception causes families to lose months or years before realizing they have to drive the process themselves.
The data
The qualitative pattern lined up with the data we could find publicly.
- The NCAA's own scholarship page reports that only about 2% of high school athletes receive athletics scholarship money. Most high school athletes who want to play college sports will not play at D1, regardless of how much their family invests in club, travel, or paid recruiting help.
- NCAA participation rates vary sharply by sport — roughly 3.6% of high school men's basketball players go on to NCAA competition, 6.1% for men's soccer, 13.8% for women's lacrosse, 33.6% for women's ice hockey. The picture across sports is consistent: the pool of recruitable athletes at the elite levels is far smaller than the pool of high school participants.
- The largest paid recruiting service in the country has a 4.0/5 Trustpilot rating with more than 4,000 reviews — but the longitudinal pattern in those reviews shows a sharp drop-off from the onboarding period to the long-term experience. Families describe an active first month, followed by automation, generic advice, and unresponsive recruiting coaches.
- BBB filings and consumer complaint records contain consistent themes: unclear pricing, sales pressure during the call, binding multi-year contracts difficult to exit, refunds limited to career-ending injuries with a physician's letter required within 90 days.
None of this is hidden. It's all publicly searchable. But families typically discover it after they've signed, not before.
The insight that led to GetRecruited
The research kept pointing back to one conclusion: families don't lack access to information. They lack honest judgment about what's realistic, and a structure for acting on it.
Most families, when asked, could describe what college recruiting requires in broad strokes — emails to coaches, film, visits, comparing offers. They knew the work existed. What they didn't have was an honest read on which level was realistic, a clear sequence for doing the work consistently over 12–24 months, and tools for the parts where they'd otherwise get stuck.
That gap was the opportunity. The expensive recruiting services were selling outsourced work that families could mostly do themselves — and selling it as a knowledge problem, when the real gaps were honesty, sequence, and follow-through. Give families those, and the case for paying a managed service collapses.
What we built as a response

The families in this research didn't need someone to take recruiting off their hands. They needed an honest map and a reason to trust they could follow it themselves. That's what we built.
