A college coach has had the recruiting conversation hundreds of times. Your athlete has had it almost never. That imbalance is the real reason families walk away from calls and visits feeling good but knowing nothing concrete — the coach controls the framing, and an excited 16-year-old isn't going to interrupt the momentum to ask what the scholarship actually covers.
Good questions level that out. They do two jobs at once: they pull real information out of a conversation that's designed to sell, and they signal that your athlete is a serious, thoughtful recruit — which is exactly the kind coaches want. Asking a sharp question is not rude or presumptuous. Coaches notice the recruits who ask them.
The trick is matching the question to the moment. A first introductory call is not a campus visit, which is not the night before you commit. Asking about four-year scholarship renewal on a first call is premature; not asking about it before you sign is a mistake. The sections below are organized by stage — skip to where you actually are.
Questions for a first call or introductory conversation
The first real conversation is about one thing: is this a genuine opportunity, or a name on a long list? You're not negotiating yet. You're finding out whether it's worth investing months of energy here. A few precise questions answer that faster than ten vague ones.
- Are you recruiting my position/event for my graduation class? The single most valuable early question. A program that already has three commits at your spot in your year is a very different opportunity than one with a clear need — and coaches will usually tell you straight, because it saves them time too.
- What does your recruiting timeline look like for my class? When do they expect to start making offers or decisions? This tells you whether you're early, on time, or behind.
- What would you need to see from me to keep evaluating me? Updated film, a faster time or a new mark, a visit, a camp, a transcript. This turns a polite conversation into a concrete next step — and a coach who can't name anything isn't really evaluating you.
- Where can you see me compete next? Give them a specific upcoming game, meet, tournament, or showcase. A coach who has nowhere to watch you has nothing to act on.
- What's the best way to stay in touch, and how often? Email, a recruiting platform, a phone number — and a cadence so your follow-ups land as helpful rather than pushy.
Questions for a recruiting call
Once a coach has shown real interest and you're talking regularly, the questions shift from "is this real" to "where do I actually stand, and is the fit honest." This is where families most often hear what they want to hear instead of what's true.
- How do you see me fitting into your program? At what position or in what role, and what's the realistic path to playing time? A specific answer ("we'd develop you as a middle-distance recruit behind two seniors") is worth far more than "we think you'd be a great fit."
- How many athletes at my position/event are you recruiting in my class? One spot and five recruits is a different bet than two open spots and three recruits.
- Where do I stand in your recruiting right now? It is completely appropriate to ask this directly. You're not demanding a commitment — you're asking for a read so you can spend your time well. How a coach answers tells you as much as what they say.
- What's your timeline, and is there a point where I'd need to make a decision? This surfaces real deadlines early, before they become pressure later.
- What does the day-to-day actually look like? Practice volume, travel, the in-season versus off-season time commitment. The honest version, not the brochure version.
A note on the "where do I stand" question: families avoid it because it feels confrontational, but coaches respect it, and the alternative is guessing for months. If the answer stays vague over time — lots of warmth, no specifics, no concrete next step — that vagueness is itself an answer. Questions to ask on a campus visit
A visit — official or unofficial — is the highest-information setting in recruiting, because you can see the program instead of hearing about it. Don't waste that face time on things you could have answered online. Ask the things you can only learn in person, and split your questions between the coaching staff and the people who actually live the experience.
Ask the coaching staff:
- What does a typical week look like in-season? Off-season? The answer tells you how much of your athlete's life the sport consumes.
- How is playing time earned here? Listen for specifics. "The best players play" is a non-answer.
- How many athletes at my position are you recruiting this cycle, and who's returning? Cross-check it against the roster on the team's website before you arrive.
- What does the financial aid picture actually look like? Ask for exact dollars rather than percentages: what's covered, whether athletic aid stacks with academic or need-based aid, and how renewal works year to year.
- Can an athlete realistically finish [my major] here in four years? Some majors collide with practice and travel schedules. Ask whether their athletes in that major finished on time or needed a fifth year.
Ask current players — ideally without a coach in the room:
- What's the best part of being on this team? The hardest part?
- Would you choose this school again?
- What do you wish you'd known before you committed?
- What's the team like when things are going badly? Any team looks unified during a winning season; culture shows under pressure.
Current players give you the version coaches can't — not because coaches lie, but because coaches are selling and players are living. Questions for parents to ask college coaches
Coaches generally want to hear from the athlete directly, and your athlete should carry most of the conversation. But the money and stability questions are exactly the ones a nervous teenager won't push on — and they're the ones that determine whether an offer is actually a good deal. This is where parents earn their place in the room.
- What is the actual out-of-pocket net cost, per year, for four years? Not the scholarship headline. The remaining bill after all aid, against the full cost of attendance.
- Is the scholarship renewable each year, and under what conditions can it be reduced or pulled? Most NCAA athletic aid is awarded one year at a time. "Most get renewed" is not "yours is guaranteed."
- What happens to the scholarship if my child is seriously injured? If you leave the program? Both are more common than families expect, and the policies vary.
- What's the team's graduation rate, and what academic support exists for athletes? A program well below its school's average graduation rate, with a coach who can't speak to it, is showing you where academics sit on their priority list.
